چکیده
Thermosetting based polymeric composites possess poor impact resistance and level of absorbed energy mainly due to the inherent brittleness. The low ductility of composites become even worse when the interfacial interaction of natural fibers/thermosetting polymer is suppressed as a result of incompatible hydrophobicity of the composite components and thus poor interfacial chemical affinity. This study evaluates the feasibility of hybrid polyester micro/nanocomposites reinforced with kenaf fiber and graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) in order to assess synergistic effects of the filers on the mechanical behavior of the composites. To examine the study’s hypothesis, micro/nanocomposites filled with 20 wt% of random fibers, aligned and crossed kenaf fiber were fabricated as the reference and compared with those reinforced with 5 wt% of GNPs. The results exhibited 2300% increase in the impact resistance in the aligned continuous kenaf fiber composites filled with GNPs. 10 and 50% improvement in the impact resistance was observed in the case of aligned and crossed continuous fiber nanocomposites with respect to their corresponding microcomposites, respectively. The results demonstrated that the composites filled with short random fibers resulted in the greatest flexural modulus and strength exhibiting 300 and 540% enhancement with respect to the neat system, respectively.
